Stockholm: | Stockholm 101

Here is our Beginner's Guide for Stockholm that includes tips for Transportation, Regions, Places of Interest and suggestion for Accommodation.

We decided to go to Stockholm to spend cool summer days in June. We always wanted to go there, but the cold weather hold us back. After our trip to Stockholm we have realised that we made a big mistake delaying this trip and looked ways coming back to the city of islands. We may challenge ourselves coming back in winter time

Best time to go

Summer season is highly recommended as it was also a bit cold for us while walking around the city during June.

Transportation

From airport to the city :

Here are the two options to travel back and forth to the Arlanda airport: (ARN)

In the city:

We preferred bikes and scooter instead of bus or taxi and we walked as much as we could, highly recommend to you guys. You can buy online or at 7Eleven shops and some shops here directly.

If you think to get Stockholm Pass Card ; you need to plan your trip. Because it’s handy to who wants to use bus or subway and ticket for museums. However if you would like to discover around the city more than touristic activities this card won’t be useful for you. It’s up to you.

Stockholm Attractions and Regions of Stockholm

Before planning your trip, it is a good idea to take a look at the areas beforehand. Thus, by planning what you can do on which days, you can determine the places you want to see, what you want to experience; you can create a Stockholm plan by yourself.

There are big and small islands and each has its own beauty in the city. The answer to the best things in Stockholm depends on the following; the number of days of travel, whether or not to visit the museum, prefer to hang out more local factors and it will vary from person to person. In general, we wanted to briefly summarize the regions of the city below and give a brief description of the places to visit.

From here you can look into the museums by selecting a region or in general. Before you start searching, let us explain the regions.

  • Normalm

  • Östermalm

  • Gamla Stan

  • Södermalm

  • Djurgården

  • Skeppsholmen

  • Kungsholmen

Norrmalm

Almost all Stockholm trips start in the Norrmalm area. Norrmalm; the most crowded and business district of the city. Stockholm’s main terminals for trains and buses are located in this area. That's one of the reasons for density. The T-Centralen station, which connects 3 lines on the Stockholm metro, is located in Norrmalm.

- National Museum

- The Royal Opera House

- Stockholm Concert Hall

- Stockholm Public Library

Östermalm

Östermalm, which is very close to Norrmalm, is the most luxurious part of the city. We can say that the most expensive houses and the richest people in the town are in this region.

- The Swedish History Museum

- Swedish Museum of Performing Arts

Gamla Stan

Gamla Stan is also referred to as the Old Town of Stockholm is one of the most popular areas in Stockholm. Its historical structure is still preserved today. Strolling through the narrow streets of Gamla Stan and its impressive atmosphere is very enjoyable. Keep in mind that everything is more expensive because it is a tourist zone. However, this region is quite good for souvenirs.

- Riddarholmen Church

- The Royal Palace

- Stockholm Katedrali

- Nobel Museum (Nobelmuseet)

Södermalm

Our favorite area was Södermalm, just south of Gamla Stan, is the most cool & modern part of the city (our opinion). It is the most popular address of the locals who want to hang out in the city. This region is ideal for those who want to drink craft beer, students, young people, shabby but want to spend quality time. While you are walking around Södermalm, you can discover unique shops such as handmade ceramics and second-hand items. Although you can find great coffees all over the city, we can say that the best coffees are in this region. It might be the reason for the popularity of this region! We preferred to mention coffees in this article. Södermalm is also preferable to go out at night.

- SkyView

- Fotografiska (You can review this article.)

Djurgården

Djurgården island with many parks & musems. Also Gröna Lund which is an amusement park in Stockholm, Sweden is on the seaward side of Djurgården Island. It is quite enjoyable to visit here by bike or to walk in the fresh air.

- Skansen

- Vasa Museum

- Nordiska museet

- ABBA Museum

- Gröna Lund (You can review this article.)

Skeppsholmen

Skeppsholmen in Norrmalm is the tiny islet between Gamla Stan and Djurgarden. After your visit to Gröna Lund or Djurgården island, you can hop on the ferry to see the Moderna Museet and the Architecture Museum in Skeppsholmen. If you are not going to do an activity like a canal tour, you would have the chance to experience such a crossing by ferry.

- Moderna Museet

- Architecture Museum

The City Hall

Kungsholmen

As we walked from Södermalm to the city center, we couldn't find anything to recommend except Stadshuset, Stockholm City Hall. As we were so tired of passing through Kungsholmen, we had dinner at Prime Burger which we saw on our way. Here we will talk about our food and drink article.

If you pass through Kungsholmen, stop by City Hall and take a photo.

Where to Stay in Stockholm

We can say that you can stay in Södermalm without thinking! Depending on your transportation preference, the place you want to stay may vary; metro stations, bicycle parks or if you prefer walking, you can stay in the middle of the city. From here you can look at the metro stations and the bicycle stops. Norrmalm can be a good choice if you want to stay in the middle of the city and take a walk.

Our interest in Scandinavian Design led us to plan this trip. That's why we went directly to AirBnB without looking at any hotels and found our dream home. If you want to see the apartment we're staying in, check here we're talking about it and the home decor stores we discovered.
